6.5 Computer and Information Resources (CIR)

A university-wide organization responsible for information and communication technology resources and services, CIR reports to the University Provost as the Chairman of the Executive Council. CIR manages computer and communication resource planning, acquisitioning, and reporting, and is charged with delivering academic and administrative computing, as well as telecommunications services to the university community.

The three major service components, Academic Computing, Administrative Information Systems, and Telecommunications are managed by the Associate Vice President for CIR. Additionally, the central office of CIR coordinates the University's efforts in the legislatively-mandated Information Resources Management activities involving short- and long-range planning, technology acquisition, and associated reporting.

Advice and assistance to faculty, staff, students, and administrators on the ever-changing facets of technology applications are offered by the operating units and CIR central staff. University departments are required procedurally to coordinate major information and communication acquisitions through CIR.

FSU is one of only a few universities in the nation with state-of-the-art Supercomputer facilities plus other significant mainframes, special-purpose mini-computers, and some 2,000 micro-computers. In addition, a new digital telecommunications switch has been recently installed, and a fiber-optic backbone network is being added to an already large number of network capabilities. CIR is committed to maintaining the visibility of FSU as a center for high technology in support of instruction, research, public service, and administration.
